Are you new?

Maybe it's because they had a very sheltered upbringing? Fullerton doesn't seem to have a very diverse society and they probably knew every family in the area through all their lives. Not a lot of occasion to learn to be a good judge of character, is there? OTOH James has had a chance to move more in society at Oxford, to no avail it seems...

You make a good point! Lucky for Catherine, she has friends like the Tilneys. Maybe James would have benefited from friends like that?
