Are you new?

It caught my attention when I read this last night that it's John who points out the Tilneys walking down the road while they're driving out of town - Catherine hadn't even noticed them. Do you think he really doesn't know who they are when he asks, "Who is that girl...?" Or does he know and is taking the opportunity to flaunt his "win" for the day, thinking that Catherine will find him clever?
