this explanation of "Richard" as an unsatisfacory name that is a family joke is found in the Explanatory Notes. It goes on to say: In a letter dated 15 September 1796, Austen writes "Mr. Richard Harvey's match is put off till he has got a Better Christian name, of which he has great hopes."
