Ah, but Catherine's feelings were bought off by flattery, too, in that instance.

I think, learning social nuances before censoring them, might not be a undesirable trait; as long as Catherine keeps her principles in place, she should do well, whether she eventually approves (or not!) either Mr. Thorpe or Mr. Tilney.
