It's been a while since I read MP, but you make a good point! Both Mr Rushworth and Mr Thorpe have only a few interests and no inclination to speak of anything else. It does make me wonder, do they really believe those subjects to be equally interesting to everyone else?

In Mr Rushworth's defence, he never sets my teeth on edge as John Thorpe does. The way he exaggerates everything to make himself look like the cleverest and friendliest of man, with the finest gig and fastest horse in England! And so transparently untrue as well...
