You may be right, it is a likely explanation.

However, in Peguin's edition annotated by Marilyn Butler, it's also theorized that this remark may be connected to JA's History of England (as Stephanie mentioned). Perhaps her description of Richard III (or any other king or queen mentioned) is meant to be taken as complete irony?

Still, a dig at Richard Crosby mat be the less convoluted reasoning :)
