I had the same reaction when I came across the reference to baseball. As another sports fan (cricket more than baseball), and also being one of the few persons who like Catherine have actually played both games in my youth I looked around to see if this was indeed the first reference to baseball. 2 references below:

On the tomboy front I noted with interest that “stoolball” was played by milkmaids, and of course rounders is essentially a girl’s game (I’ve played that too, yes, with girls).
But I certainly agree that JA is taking great pains create a non-“heroine” image of Catherine.
