Tomboy   Written by Frances G (4/2/2012 10:18 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, On the other hand..., penned by Srirup
Are you new?

Yes, I noticed that Jane Austen emphasizes that Catherine was a bit of a tomboy with her base ball and cricket. It seems to me that that is another knock against her suitability as a heroine. I imagine the heroine of a gothic novel should be delicate and ladylike, not athletic and active.

P.S. As a big baseball fan, it's extremely amusing that first known reference to the sport was by my favorite author, Jane Austen. (even if the sport she was talking about is probably a bit different from the modern game.)
