I have seen this story recounted (and I did say it was a 'story' and that this was 'thought to be' perhaps a family joke) in any number of places, including some of the editions of NA that I own. I haven't got access to anything but the online novel during my lunch hour, but I'll find one--or several-- when I get home.
This is what JA wrote in her 'History of England' about Richard III:
No mention of anyone disliking him because of his name, so that does nothing to disprove what I was saying.
Northanger Abbey was published after JA died, so the preface probably means that there were no alterations made by anyone other than Jane Austen herself prior to the publication.
