Yes, I do remember that passage in "Persuasion!"

Although named Richard, Catherine's father seems sterling and good-hearted enough, as the following passage plainly shows, though not without irony.
"Her father, instead of giving her an
unlimited order on his banker, or even putting an hundred pounds
bank-bill into her hands, gave her only ten guineas, and promised
her more when she wanted it..."
NA has so many phrases of this sort jumping up at the reader, I wish I could learn them all by heart to use when occasion requires!
