Inside joke   Written by Barbara (4/2/2012 1:39 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, What's wrong with Richard?, penned by Helen Kaye
Are you new?

This comment on the name 'Richard' was thought to be an inside joke that Jane's family would have found amusing.

The original manuscript for 'Northanger Abbey' (then called 'Susan') was purchased for 10 pounds in 1803 by a publisher named Richard Crosby. Crosby then did nothing with the manuscript and let it languish for years until Jane bought it back from him. People think this reference to 'though his name was Richard' was a dig at Crosby for her family's amusement.
