Mrs. Radcliffe   Written by Virginia (3/28/2009 10:39 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, But Isabella was already dancing with Capt. Tilney..., penned by Adrian
Are you new?

I have read NA several times before but decided this time to look for references to Anne Radcliffe. Of course The Mysteries of Udolpho provides a background to NA. In the past however I think I believed NA was a spoof of Udolpho and other books in the genre. It is of course, especially in the second part when Catherine goes to Northanger, but I now feel it's more complicated than that -- I came away from the read this time feeling Jane Austen admired Mrs. Radcliffe and enjoyed her novels while knowing that there were limitations to them and that she was writing and would continue to write novels of a different type.
