...no acquaintance in Bath except the Thorpes. Presumably that means the General could only (directly) approach John Thorpe or Mr. Allen for information.

Certainly asking Mr. Allen if Catherine was his heiress would be a faux pas, but I still like your explanation that the General was just plain overconfident and stupid. After all, Henry early on had better information on both the Thorpes and Catherine without asking.
