...in James' letter in ch.25 is that despite his severe disappointment in Isabella, he can still write at the end that "[he] can never expect to know such another woman!". This is consistent with JA's other novels where those disappointed in love still think well of their ex-partners, and feel better for doing so, while today IMO we would expect someone who had recently broken up to make themselves feel better by going over all their ex-partner's faults.
