And every creature was her friend.

And her "friends" sounded like the hare´s friends as well:

The horse replied - "Poor honest puss,
It grieves my heart to see thee thus;"
and off she (or he?) goes. And the calf:

Excuse me then. You know my heart,
But dearest friends, alas! must part.
How shall we all lament!...
I clearly hear Isabella speaking in those lines...

Thinking on it, it struck me that even in her sheltered world she learned about the danger of false friends. But somehow she failed to be on her guard...
