I suppose that he was a "poor" relation of the former viscount, a cousin maybe or a nephew, etc., and inherited the title because there was no direct heir.

(I'm thinking of Lord Byron, who inherited the title of Baron from his great uncle)

(I suppose that you mean to write Eleanor. I don't believe that *Elinor* would have liked to be a *Gothic* heroine, that's more like for her sister.;-) )
