other people's actions", I think, is presented as one of her strong points--the people she can't read don't deserve to be understood; they are trying to muddy everything they say and do.


I think her growth in the novel consists of retaining her ability to "talk straight" and appreciate others who do so as well, but also developing her ability to discern that not all people are as straightforward as she is.

As for "accidentally allowing John Thorpe to fall in love with her"; how could anyone propose to have stopped him from proceeding in his matrimonial plan? The Thorpe nuptial Juggernaut was beyond the control of any mere mortal.
