the reader is expected to have a greater experience of the vagueries of human behaviour than Catherine has so far gained. She is a true innocent, trusting absolutely in what she is told and in people's basic goodness. This, of course, is due to the fact that she grew up in exactly that kind of atmosphere. Her family are good people who do not engage in any form of teasing.

It influences her to the point that she almost feels guilty for not liking John Thorpe when the reader knows she should be running as far away from him as possible!
