Are you new?

In the first place, Sally is often a nickname/diminutive for Sarah. And secondly, the phrase "altering her name as far as she can" seems to indicate that this young lady is NOT changing her name to something completely different.

If "Sally" is the (nick)name her family calls her, then "Sarah" would sound less childish to a young woman; I think Sally wanted to be more grown up, and she was trying to use her name to effect that.
