I'd never noticed the connection, until Adrian pointed it out, between perceiving how her eye was employed and the onset of the general's competitive curiosity about the Allen's wealth. The general's a face-reader but not a mind-reader, and isn't used to visitors looking so disappointed with his elegant furniture, handsome fireplace, pretty ornaments, and clear light windows.
