slight difference on 1st paragraph   Written by Diane N. (3/21/2009 1:06 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Not listening to the answers; habits compatible with Henry's, penned by Tom P2
Are you new?

I think that what the first paragraph says is:

Catherine had imagined all the same things about the Abbey as it turned out in fact to be: she was made more certain by hearing about the details, but had already believed them to be the case from her own imagination.

"she was hardly more assured than before"

That is to say, she was already quite sure what the Abbey's history and details were, and barely learned anything new from hearing the actual facts listed. The Abbey, therefore, thoroughly fit her imagination.
