I remember Agatha Christie in her autobiography telling the story of a young man who proposed to her at the beginning of a train journey they were making together (they were the only ones in the compartment). She turned him down, so they had to spend the next two hours staring out the windows in embarrassment, and she resented him ever after! ;-)
