...well enough to at least speak to him (not always obvious in JA's time, IMO) and to discuss Catherine with him, so I think JT must have done more than just observe the General from a distance at the Bedford. On the other hand, that doesn't mean his account of that billiard game is any more accurate than you suspect! ;-)
