I agree that a totally mature & rational audience would have found his "fan fic" rendition a hoot. But he is aware that Catherine, while in general quite rational, is not totally mature--she is still green & impressionable & vulnerable to turns of fancy on "a dark and stormy night"--& the subsequent days.
