Are you new?

She was a married woman - married to a "friend" of his. I actually think it was less of a stretch for her to call him Knightley than it is for Isabella here - a single woman without any relationship to this man - to be referring to him by his last name. It's not like the Captain was a friend of James' after all! Perhaps this is why Davies had them go as far as he did in his adaptation of the book.
