I had assumed that it was another of John Thorpe' half-truths. Somehow he did know the General, but I didn't trust his story at all.

I think John's comment tells us a lot about him and not necessarily anything about the General. The General has several bad traits but I can't see the General comfortable socializing at the Bedford (as the post describes it).
