This thread doesn't have nearly enough different interpretations yet, so here's another.

The collection of books, on which an humble man might have looked with pride is so very impressive that it must inspire pride in its owner, even if the owner should happen to be humble. I don't think anything more than that is implied. General Tilney may well be proud of it.

Catherine settles for merely running over the titles of half a shelf because her hopes are focussed elsewhere: on seeing pre-1500AD furniture and suites of apartments such as one reads about.
