I got the opposite impression about the library.   Written by nan duval (3/19/2009 5:50 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, General T is a "man's man", penned by Karen G
Are you new?

I took the quote to mean that a humble man (which the General is not) would be proud of the library which is equal in size to the ginormous special, guests only drawing room. That Catherine's interest in the library could be satisfied by a cursory survey of half the books on a shelf contrasted her minimal literary interest to the General's--perhaps not his real interest but that which he wanted to project.

I think the general would want to be regarded as a well read person, & perhaps at some time had read some of his books. I agree that he does at present seem more consumed by pamphlets than Plato.
