I just got the NA audiobook two days ago (unabridged, of course, and read by Juliet Stevenson), and I'm listening to it in my car as I drive. It's WONDERFUL! I first got P&P for Christmas, and loved it, so I then I got Persuasion, Emma and now NA. I can't say enough good about them; I feel they are kind of like having the best JA movies anyone can imagine! As I listen, I can "see" the characters, but NONE of JA's marvelous writing is missing. Ahhh... the best of both worlds!
This GR is my FIRST time reading NA, and I'm enjoying it no end. I have seen the two adaptations, but that was some time ago, and they simply do not do it justice; not even CLOSE! Now, LISTENING to JA's words, I'm getting an entirely different experience from READING her words.
Juliet Stevenson does an excellent job of differentiating between the characters. I've just finished Chapter 3, when Catherine, Henry, and Mrs. Allen have the "muslin" conversation. I had no trouble telling who was speaking at any time. JA's writing is so -- I'm trying to find a word GOOD enough here -- wonderful, amazing, terrific all come to mind, but they are inadequate.
When I consider that JA and her family REGULARLY read to each other out loud in the evenings, I know why I'm enjoying this so much; this is the way her books were MEANT to be experienced. No wonder I'm loving it!
I don't know how to link to Amazon.com so that RoP can get the benefit of the purchase, in case anyone wants to buy it. Perhaps someone will please do that? It's very, very good, and I'm laughing frequently as I drive. I know that it is kind of expensive, but it is worth it, and you won't be sorry if you buy it.
