I just appreciated the observation in ch.23 about "abbeys and castles, in which, though certainly larger than Northanger, all the dirty work of the house was to be done by two pair of female hands at the utmost". It's so true isn't it, not just in gothic novels but many old movies too: a huge old place apparently maintained by a couple of servants! ;-)
