Ch. 20 L&T question: Catherine's own new writing desk   Written by Line (3/17/2009 9:22 a.m.)
Are you new?

In ch.20, we are told that the chaise was so crowded that Catherine "had some difficulty in saving her own new writing–desk from being thrown out into the street". I gather that this was not *my* idea of a writing desk (which would hardly fit inside a carriage by itself, let alone with three passengers plus a lot of other packages). Can anyone tell (or show) me what JA meant by a writing desk?
