Constancy & Competence   Written by Robbin (3/16/2009 11:33 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Thorpes and money; resemblance to Mansfield Park, penned by Tom P2
Are you new?

Thank you! Constancy is becoming a major theme just as it is in MP. I am looking forward to what happens next. (;D) JT might not have received Isabella’s last as MarianneR suggests but he also seems to think Catherine can expect financial support from outside her family. In Ch. 9 he asks if Mr. Allen is Catherine’s godfather and she sets him right but I am not sure he gave up the idea the childless Allens will do something wonderful for her:

“Oh! Mr. Allen, you mean. Yes, I believe, he is very rich.”
“And no children at all?”
“No — not any.”
“A famous thing for his next heirs. He is your godfather, is not he?”
“My godfather! No.”
“But you are always very much with them.”
“Yes, very much.”
“Aye, that is what I meant. He seems a good kind of old fellow enough…” (Ch. 9)
