.. is the way my paperback copy has it in English. It's not a very common syntax nowadays, but also not an entirely archaic way of saying it. Most English speakers would recognize what it means, I think. (I don't know if similar sentence structure would work in other languages; apparently your translator thought the German version needed the clarification of adding the word "letter".)
