Mrs. Radcliffe   Written by Virginia (3/15/2009 3:17 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Third week already?!, penned by Lynn
Are you new?

I have been watching for clues concerning Jane Austen's possible opinion of Mrs. Radcliffe. On the Beechen Cliff walk Henry Tilney says, "I have read all Mrs. Racliffe's works and most of them with great pleasure. The Mysteries of Udolpho, when I had once begun it, I could not lay down again; -- I remember finishing it in two days -- my hair standing on end the whole time."

Jane has put these words in the mouth of Mr. Tilney but at times, he appears to be a spokesman for JA.
