I think the elder Thorpes were following what sticklers, at least, would consider the correct procedure at the time in not telling the younger ones about the engagement until it had been confirmed by the Morland parents' consent.
However, if they *really* wanted to keep it a secret, they should have shut up about it instead of dropping hints and acting so unusually. I'm sure that most families at the time would have told their teenagers about it while underlining that it was not official yet, and they should keep quiet about it for now.
