FOCUS: What Catherine Read --from Ch. 22   Written by Adrian (3/15/2009 9:35 a.m.)
Are you new?

From Ch. 22

At the start of Chapter 22, she reads the laundry lists and farrier’s bill (LOL).

Later the narrator makes a reference that could imply that Catherine has read more books like Udolpho. Speaking of Catherine’s deteriorating feelings about the General, she says…

His cruelty to such a charming woman made him odious to her. She had often read of such characters, characters which Mr. Allen had been used to call unnatural and overdrawn; but here was proof positive of the contrary.

Presumably Catherine did not read of such characters in “The Hare and Many Friends.” Interestingly enough, this passage also suggests that Catherine has at some point at least briefly talked with Mr. Allen about her reading.
