Miss Austen quite explicitly writes 'at them', which make the meaning perfectly clear in this case. Thanks for pointing it out.

Also thank you Line, for pointing out the difference between editions - my new edition has 'quizzers', and I was wondering how the 'r' had slipped my attention before.
