says that this means the early afternoon.

I agree that it's strange that it's capitalized, but it doesn't make any sense in context if it's taken to be the street. I've seen, however, lots of examples of punctuation and capitalization in JA's writing (and other authors of the time) that is different from what we would do today, so I'm chalking it up to that.
