I agree to what you said so far, but I am still looking for the deeper meaning of that paragraph. Given that JA never made any remarks inadvertently I wonder what she wanted to convey with that talk about the impending calamity. Did she intend to mock at the gullibility of gothic-novel readers and their lack of realism? Sorry, but I am not contented yet...
