JA was so good at not mentioning those invisible servants... :-( I know that Anne Elliot goes around by herself, but she is 10 years older than Catherine, and does things like visit Mrs. Smith without her father's approval (*gasp*) , so I think the rules were somewhat different for an "older" woman.

However, from Robbin's evidence (thanks, Robbin!) it does sound more as though Catherine was out on her own, so perhaps the rules weren't as strict as I always thought.
