What men want vs. what women are   Written by JoAnn (3/12/2009 1:33 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Ch 14: Hard to make this one out..., penned by Karen G
Are you new?

Notice that what she describes here is the man's perspective - men in those days seem to have wanted (expected?) a wife to make their lives more pleasant, but not to interfere with any serious matters. Women were to be seen and not heard, generally with no say in matters of business, finance, politics, etc. So having a wife who is pleasant but uninformed would be a good thing. No where, though, does she say that this is the case for women - just that they would do well to make men think that it is!

There was something else about this passage that struck me. How old was JA when she wrote this book? Wasn't she still very young? Her reference to the capital pen of a sister author sounded to me like she's awfully confident about her place in the world as an author. Go Jane!
