In the notes in The Romance of the Forest, I found those quotations from Rousseau's Emilius and Sophia

'it is our passions that render us feeble' [II, 2]

'[those garments] which most distinguish the wearer, are often such as are least remarkable in themselves' [IV, 36]

'Solitude and silence are friends to true pleasure. Tender emotions and tears are the companions of enjoyment.' [II, 183]

'Thus we see how the soft and affectionate passions arise from self-love, and the hateful and irascible ones from self-interest' [II, 140]
