Are you new?

My question has to do with whether the choice of those names is an intentional reference back to the heroines of gothic novels - Catherine has the novels to keep her company, while Anne has her own version of Sophia and Emily to keep her company. But it only works if Sophia is also a known gothic heroine - that's what I'm asking.

Sorry to be unclear!
