I don't think this is a matter of Thorpe's poor judgment, though. Instead, he tends to exagerrate and to believe whatever he fancies will be to his benefit, reality be d---ed. He's seen that Catherine is with the Allens, draws a few surmises about what that might mean, and runs with it because he wants to believe it. So I'm not sure it's so much a matter of judgment as it is a matter of a skewed perception of reality. Same net effect, though. :-)
