Backfiring boasting   Written by CarolTS (3/11/2009 4:20 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, John Thorpe´s way of talking, penned by MarianneR
Are you new?

I think it's hilarious that John's boasting of his own carriage by putting down James' in chapter 9 completely backfires on him (in a way, I'm sure, that he wasn't expecting!).

Here is the poor innocent boy - trying to impress a girl by showing how superior her situation is. And what does the silly girl do - but get upset about the possible falling of her brother and her friend! What is wrong with girls today when they can't even see what a good thing they have in front of them?

So - naturally - to clear up this little problem - he says that obviously they're going to be alright and he, personally, could drive the rickety old thing all the way to York. You'd think that would relieve her mind and let her concentrate on him instead of her brother - wouldn't you?
