I think HT resents Thorpe's intrusion, and perhaps (as some have said below) Catherine's own lack of attention to her dance partner. But the way he handles this is not to expose his pique, but to display his deft wit and keen insights into the human condition.

Plus, it's pretty funny. Thorpe is such a dope.
