that James sees through John. In chapter 7, he actually thinks him good and likeable --

'He is as good-natured a fellow as ever-lived; a little of a rattle; but that will recommend him to your sex I believe.'

His opinion of John doesn't seems changed and he even approves of John's behaviour in chapter 13. Taking John's part here is wrong even if he is only doing it for Isabella.
