How fast could a horse-drawn carriage go?   Written by Line (3/9/2009 7:03 p.m.)

In ch.7 and 9, we discover that the horse pulling John Thorpe's gig *never* goes less than ten miles an hour. ;-) Though I can't find it right now, I seem to remember reading here at Pemberley that the average speed of a horse-drawn carriage was about *eight* miles an hour, though of course speeds could vary considerably depending on the weight of the carriage, the freshness and number of the horses, etc. If John Thorpe's horse invariably reaches a speed of ten miles an hour, this does seem faster than average...
