And when they go for a ride in his gig (ch.9) he goes a step further in enquiring her about Mr. Allen:


“Old Allen is as rich as a Jew — is not he?”...
“And no children at all?”...
“A famous thing for his next heirs. He is your godfather, is not he?”

Clueless as she is, Catherine doesn´t realize that also...
