here is another contradictory term prededing the paragraph you mentioned (ch.9):

With sniffles of most exquisite misery, and the laughing eye of utter despondency, she bade her friend adieu and went on.

Could you give a short explanation on the word "oxymoron"? I am not sure whether it has to consist of two contradictory words only - then my example wouldn´t count...
